There are a lot of tags used by car insurance companies to get your attention and we’re harangued by these every night and day on television.
Hello, Bob Aldons, from The Car Guy and Car Business with a story about my recent experiences with a car insurance renewal.
We’ve got 4 cars in our family – 2 that we use on a daily basis and 2 ‘collectibles’ that are stored in a warehouse and rarely used.
So my wife Suzi’s car insurance is due shortly and as I do on receipt of every insurance renewal (home, cars, business), I went to the market to see how prices compared with the RACQ renewal.
For fact-checking, it’s a 2019 Honda Civic VTi-LX. Suzi only travels about 13,000klm per year so I selected the 10,000klm-15,000klm kilometre band for comparisons.
I also used the following information for my car insurance comparison
Driver age: 58
Driving history No accidents over the last 5 years
Personal History Nothing that would affect the premium
Under Finance Yes
Secondary Driver Yes (me)
And here are the prices achieved
RACQ Car Insurance Renewal $529.09 (Up from $503.98 for the previous year)
Suncorp $532.12
Youi $736.45 to $535.00
Budget Direct $509.90
NRMA $475.75
AAMI $702.20
Allianz $627.37
Real Car Insurance $542.71
PD Car Insurance $532.89
Now Youi is a curious case in point. You can’t get a price online – you submit your information and details. About 20 minutes later, someone from Youi calls to ‘discuss’ your submission.
Typically this ‘quick chat’ takes about 25 minutes and after all that, they quote you a premium. In our case it started at $736.45 and eventually dropped to $535.00 (lowered by 37%) after I said that they were too expensive with their first price.
Wonder how many people just accept Youi’s first price?
NRMA was 11% less than RACQ with their online quote whereas AAMI were the second most expensive at $702.75 – seems that the extensive advertising campaign has to be paid for somewhere.
And if you’ve noticed the quirky advertising by Budget Direct on television, it seems that their offer is pretty competitive – they were $19 cheaper than RACQ but $34 more expensive than the best, NRMA
I’m not a car insurance salesperson, but I do shop around when its my hard earned money. But I’m sure that you can see that my process gets the best results.
