A Memory of a Great Mate – Gone too soon

Lex Bell

I live in Sandgate and work in Redcliffe, so I cross the Houghton Highway every day. And yes, it’s seven days a week – I work on Saturday for a few hours and then come in on Sunday to feed my fish

And every day, I look north-west across Bramble Bay and say good morning to my mate, Lex. Lex passed away on April 4th 2019 from Mesothelioma. Lex told me about the disease a couple of years before, in 2016 I think and to say I was shocked would be an understatement. Lex was a fighter, tough as nails, but with a heart the size of Queensland. He told me he’d do everything he could to fight it.

We spent more time together from then than we had since I first met Lex in the early 1980s. Lex came to work with me at Torque Ford for a while. After a couple of years, he left to start his demolition business. Lex and I had lunch with rugby league legend, Trevor Gillmeister to discuss the disease (Trevor’s dad died from it) and Trevor had raised funds for the Asbestos Foundation walking from Townsville to Brisbane in 2014.

Trevor told Lex that from diagnosis, most people died within 13 months on average. When we left our lunch, on the way back to the car, Lex said one word. “Bugger”

But I knew then that he’d fight it with all his being and he did. It was probably about 2 years from then that Lex passed.

I miss Lex as a friend, a confidante and as importantly as a mate. He was respected in his community and defiantely in the building trade.

And Lex, buddy, I’ll keep saying g’day to you every time I cross the bridge. Stay well

      Hi John
I’m pretty sure that this was Lex. I remember he lived at Everton Park, and his folks lived there until they passed away
I’ve known Lex for about 40 years – he worked for me at Torque Ford until he took the step into house demolitions. He’s been gone 3 years now. Was diagnosed with Asbestosis back in 2017. Fought it hard but it was always a losing battle
PAssed away at home on April 4th 2018
      Regards

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to my new website thecarguy.com.au!

I know that there’s a lot of websites that offer car reviews, car road tests, opinions on various cars and the like. What makes this site different is that I’m not going to bore you with technical information about the various cars that I review.

I’ve been in the car business for over 39 years. I’ve read the motoring magazines cover to cover. I’ve read the online reviews until my eyes were square. Everywhere that I go, I find motoring journalists talking about car speeds – 0 – 100 km per hour, standing ¼ times, the inclination of this and that at 150klm per hour on a 12.5% gradient curve, in rainy weather – and other stuff that bores me no end.

thecarguy.com.au is taking a different path on the journey to helping you purchase a new car. I’ll do my best to advise you on what I consider to be the most important information when it comes to that major decision to purchase a car. Interior room, features of the car, fuel economy, safety, service prices, resale and lots more. I’ll tell you what I like about a particular car and as importantly, what I don’t like, to find at least to be less than I think a car should have. .

And I’ll ask for your opinion. Take some pics of what you’re driving and tell me and our audience what you particularly like or dislike about your car. Because besides prospective new car buyers, there’s a lot of people who’ll read your comments as used car buyers.

So, jump on board, strap yourself in and let’s start out on the journey with The Car Guy.
