Arguably by the time you read this, Mazda will have launched their first Hybrid vehicle into the Australian market. Mazda Skyactiv-X Hybrid will be on sale in Mazda’s Australian dealerships on August 1st, followed by the Mazda CX-30 Hybrid a month later.
Mazda’s Hybrid offering joins Toyota, Mitsubishi and Subaru among the mainstream brands offering a Hybrid version of a volume model.
Here’s the press release from Mazda
30 JULY 2020: The revolutionary Skyactiv-X M Hybrid engine will go on sale Australia wide from Saturday 1 August with Mazda3, and will be available with Mazda CX-30 from September.
Achieving the high-revving performance of a petrol engine with the fuel efficiency, torque and response of a diesel, Skyactiv-X M Hybrid offers a premium driving feel that enhances the refinement of Mazda’s new generation vehicles.
The world’s first production petrol unit to exploit the benefits of diesel-like compression ignition, new 2.0-litre Skyactiv-X M Hybrid is the next step in Mazda’s multi-solution approach to reducing emissions.
It follows the launch of the highly efficient Skyactiv-G and Skyactiv-D engine technologies in 2012 and represents the first electrification technology on Mazda’s path to Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030*.
Based on the high grade Astina variant, the new Mazda3 X20 Astina will be available on both manual and automatic models with pricing starting at $40,590^, while CX-30 X20 Astina AWD will be priced at $46,490^.
Skyactiv-X is characterised by Mazda’s revolutionary Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI). This new engineering concept allows the engine to switch seamlessly between conventional spark ignition and compression ignition combustion by using a spark to trigger both types of combustion in different ways.
In SPCCI mode, a split injection process creates separate zones of fuel-air mixture inside the combustion chamber. First, a very lean fuel to air mixture is injected into the combustion chamber during the intake stroke, then a zone of atomised fuel is precisely injected directly around the spark plug during the compression stroke.
The small injection of atomised fuel directly around the spark plug builds a richer core. When the spark fires, it ignites this core of fuel and air. This increases pressure in the combustion chamber to the point where the lean mixture rapidly combusts.
Skyactiv-X also features the Mazda M Hybrid system. Compact and efficient, the mild hybrid system features a belt-driven integrated starter generator (ISG) and a 24V lithium-ion battery. It supports greater gains in fuel economy by recycling energy recovered during deceleration and powering the ISG, functioning as an electric motor, to assist the engine.

The Car Guy is an independently owned car review website. I’m currently testing cars for Mazda, Nissan, Kia, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Renault, Subaru, Hyundai and Jaguar Land Rover (soon I hope).
I’m not paid by any car company for my opinion and my companies don’t receive advertising revenue to say nice things about them . I call it as I see it.
However, I also own a new car brokerage company – Car Business. Being able to review new cars gives me an opportunity to provide accurate information on these brands. if you’re in the market for Any New Car Cheaper, contact me at Car Business and see how I go about saving you some serious money.
Perhaps you think that you can do the job of buying a new car yourself? If you’re after any advice at all, give me a call and ask me any question that you need to be answered.
If you’re an Aussie Veteran, I take particular pride in taking care of you. For every car that I source and deliver, I donate part of my fee to Mates4Mates or Brisbane Legacy.
