MY20 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Review

Not so long ago, anything without an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) engine was just so, well, just so futuristic. In 2018 I first drove the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and came away less than impressed. At the time, Tesla hadn’t arrived in any great volume in Australia, Nissan Leaf wasn’t sold here and Toyota (and to a lesser extent Honda) were the only brands with a Hybrid engine (Combination of ICE and battery power) Since then Mitsubishi has upgraded its PHEV model, Nissan has launched the Leaf, and Hyundai has the Ionic and Kona as their EV/Hybrid offerings. Toyota has introduce the RAV4 Hybrid and consumers are looking more seriously at this segment.

WHAT IS IT?

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a medium-sized SUV obviously based around Mitsubishi's successful Outlander platform. Whilst available in a 7-seat version in the ICE version, the PHEV gets 5 seats and a very large luggage area. It competes size was against models such as Volkswagen Tiguan, Toyota RAV4, Nissan X-Trail, Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V to mention a few.

HOW MUCH?

The RRP price of the Outlander PHEV Exceed is $61,384 drive away in Queensland. Models further down the food chain are the ES ($52,204) and ES ADAS ($53,224). I'm road-testing the Exceed

COMPETITORS?

Honda CR-V Mazda CX-5 Volkswagen Tiguan Toyota RAV4 There is only one PHEV in the medium SUV range and that's the Mitsubishi. If you chose to go the Hybrid route, Toyota's RAV4 is the hot seller.

Mitusbishi Outlander PHEV

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has two means of propulsion - the 2.4-litre petrol engine and two electric motors, one for the front and another for the back. If you're like me & travel about 30km a day to work and home with a little bit of round town use, this Outlander PHEV is going to save you an extraordinary amount at the bowser.

SAFETY FEATURES

Mitsubishi Outlander was tested by ANCAP in 2014. At the time, it achieved a 5-star safety rating. ^ years later, Mitsubishi hasn't presented the latest model for testing and I'm not quite sure that it would achieve 5-stars again.

ON THE INSIDE

The passenger cabin tends to be on the dark side, but that lends itself to hiding marks and stains from the family. The driver controls all fall to hand and it's an easy car to drive. The drivers seat holds well and is comfortable over a long distance

WANT ONE?

If you're in the market for any Mitsubishi, including the Outlander PHEV, the easiest way to find a dealer is to Google "Mitsubish Dealer XX" where xx is your suburb or town. My firm recommendation is to only consider dealers who have a star rating of more than 4 and then only if they have more than 15 reviews.

ON THE ROAD

Smooth around the suburbs and easy driving on the highway. The extended luggage space allows for a family load of suitcases, and more. If you're considering this as a tow vehicle, with electric brakes you're limited to 1500kg

WARRANTY & SERVICE

Mitsubishi Motors are offering a 7-year warranty on most of their range, but the PHEV still maintains the standard 5-year/100,000km warranty. Service intervals are 15,000 kilometres. Under the Mitsubishi capped-price service program, your service costs are $299 for the first 3 services.

Total Market 1062867 Down from 1,153,111 in 2018 (Down 7.8%)

So the EV, PHEV & Hybrid share of our total market is now 3.16% compared to 1.35% in 2018. That’s a pretty big lift. Total EV, PHEV & Hybrid sales for 2019 ran out to 33,566.
